Bakuchiol face oil skincare routine

How Long Does Bakuchiol Take to Work? A Realistic Timeline

Short answer: give bakuchiol about 12 weeks of regular use before you judge it. That's how long the main clinical studies ran. Your skin may feel smoother and look more even within the first few weeks, but changes in fine lines and pigmentation take longer.

Why it takes weeks, not days

Your skin renews itself in cycles. In younger adults, a full cycle of new cells reaching the surface takes roughly a month, and it slows down with age. Ingredients that target fine lines and uneven tone work on that slow process, so the visible change builds gradually. Anything promising results in days is talking about hydration, not lasting change.

What the studies measured

Two studies are cited most often:

  • Chaudhuri & Bojanowski, 2014 (International Journal of Cosmetic Science): people applied a 0.5% bakuchiol product twice a day for 12 weeks. The researchers reported improvements in the look of lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, elasticity and firmness by the end of the study.
  • Dhaliwal et al., 2019 (British Journal of Dermatology): 44 people used either 0.5% bakuchiol twice daily or 0.5% retinol once daily. Both groups improved by similar amounts at 12 weeks, and the bakuchiol group reported less stinging and scaling.

Both studies were small, so treat them as encouraging rather than final. But they agree on one thing: the results were measured at 12 weeks.

A realistic timeline

Everyone's skin is different, but this is a fair guide to what people tend to notice with consistent use:

  • Weeks 1 to 2: skin feels softer and more comfortable, mostly from the plant oils. This is the time to check your skin tolerates the product.
  • Weeks 3 to 6: texture can look smoother and skin may look more even and rested.
  • Weeks 8 to 12: this is when studies measured changes in the look of fine lines and dark spots.
  • After 12 weeks: keep going. Like any routine, the benefits depend on continued use.

How to get the most out of it

  1. Be consistent. Daily use matters more than how much you apply. The studies used it twice a day.
  2. Wear sunscreen every morning. Sun exposure is a major cause of lines and dark spots, and it will cancel out the work.
  3. Take photos. Use the same light and angle every two weeks. Gradual change is hard to see in the mirror.
  4. Don't stack too many new products at once, so you know what's working and what isn't.

Using a bakuchiol oil

Warm 3 to 5 drops between your fingertips and press into clean skin, morning, night or both. Our Zenuva Bakuchiol Oil Serum combines bakuchiol with rosehip, jojoba and evening primrose oils, sinks in to a matte finish in about 90 seconds, and works on the face, neck and body. Patch-test first if your skin reacts to fragrance.
